How to create a brochure print template from a pdf

Maybe someone can point me to an easy, automated way to do this using Acrobat (or some other software)

I have a 24-page pdf, pages in the pdf are sequential, ie page 1, page 2 etc. in 8 1/2 x 11 inch format.

I want to create a brochure which would essentially be printed on 11 x 17 inch paper, folded and stapled at the crease.
So the first 11 x 17 inch paper would have pages 1 and 24 on one side and 2 and 23 on the other side - second 11 x 17 sheet would be pages 3 and 22 on one side and 4 and 21 on the other side etc.
Is there any way to convert the original 24-page pdf to that format automatically?
Or if not, what is the best way to go about it manually?

IIRC if you have Acrobat (Acrobat Pro as was in the day) then you can reorder the pages by dragging them. So you should be able to order the pages the way you want, redefine the page layout, and print them 2 up on the 11 x 17 paper.

Print multiple pages per sheet | Acrobat, Reader

Or create a new blank 11 x 17" Acrobat document and fly in the pages individually

Or For more control, you may want to use InDesign and import the pages individually, then you will have better control over gutter width etc.

After I posted, I played around with Preview even though I do have Acrobat 9.

Preview lets one re-order the pages manually, same as Acrobat I assume, that is actually what I wanted to have dome automatically via software.
Good thing my document is only 24 pages total, took me a few tries to get the order right even so I thought I had everything figured out beforehand.

I then set up the print menu to 11x17 inch paper and to print 2 pages per sheet and saved that as a pdf.
Seems to work OK but I won't know for sure until I get it printed - don't have a wide format printer myself.

Maybe the freebe Create Booklet PDF Service would do what you want?

Download Create Booklet PDF Service for Mac - Export documents as a PDF booklet. MacUpdate.com

Or some of the other suggestions at:

I thought that MS Word has some booklet layouts in their "Project" options that also included the gutter width etc. that also might work if you have Word.app.

And maybe another option:

Thanks for the suggestions.

After looking at all of these, I think they would all do the job.
I decided to use the first one because it seems to integrate with the print>pdf dialogue rather than having to launch another application.

Tried it on the document I'm working on, the one where I manually arranged the page order and it did the work for me in a flash.
