Void warranty or not, it's the OPs choice if he needs the extra storage space to run two drives or not.
My advice would be to max out his current MBP. But to get an enclosure for his SuperDrive; just incase. I can't recall where; but somewhere I saw that they include a SuperDrive caddy with the hard drive mount bracket for little or no extra charge.

MCE OptiBay includes one...

Yes, it does void the warranty, unless performed by an appropriately authorized party.

RAM/HDD are user upgradeable.

It you don't break anything they shouldn't refuse warranty for unrelated parts. I did the SSD + superdirve replace upgrade on my laptop and it works fantastic for me. It gives me ultra fast Read Write for my OS and iTunes sits on the large 1TB platter drive. Best of both worlds but I rarely push the CPU and when I do I can wait for the video to finish processing. If I lived and died by CPU processing I'd do the machine replace 1st and the rest later
Super simple. Carbon Copy Cloner, 1 SSD drive, 2 8Gb ram chips, Philips 00 and T6 screwdrivers. Go look at ifixit.com for details.
I believe he was being facetious.
