Where can I buy a refurbished iPhone? I mean one refurbished by Apple. (I thought they only use those to replace faulty phones.)

If a repair get's botched or anything goes wrong, we have a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, and will put customer's satisfaction before profits. If that means having to purchase a refurbished phone, that's what will be done. I have multiples of every part for every device we service, so it will be extremely rare that a device can't be fixed.

You may have missed something. Asking where parts are from, or what is involved in servicing phones, might be very very helpful for this new service.

Keep in mind though that many people are pretty thrilled when they go into an Apple store with a cracked screen, a dead battery, a crappy home button, a broken mute button, OR some other issue that could be fixed on its own, given enough time, and walk out in 20 minutes with a new-looking highly-tested but refurbished Apple iPhone. Add that Apple often covers some issues that void the warranty, or devices that are out of warranty, and is happy to tell you it is a "one-time exception." Happens every day, in every Apple store.

I know you're not supposed to update jail-broken phones, but there are a truck-load of customers out there who has a friend who knows a friend who does jail-breaking, and then later they run a software update on their phone, and they think there is a hardware issue. There are in fact many instances that Apple will deny coverage if a phone is jailbroken.
My phone was actually replaced well jailbroken. I got lucky there. They didn't bother restoring it.

Ultimately, I want people to have a working phone. That's my main goal. If people have bought AppleCare+ or have gotten good service at Apple, that's great! I love success stories of people getting their phone looked after. It's not my intent in the slightest to suggest that getting service with Apple is a bad option, I just get a bit on the defensive a bit that it's the only option and that there is nothing like it.

In the case of the OP's scenario in his situation, he'd have the option to save almost $100.

The bulk of my business is doing local repairs, of which I have been doing for a couple of months. There was a gentleman with an out-of-warranty iPhone 3GS with a broken screen. For $70, I went to his location... at a campsite in Waterloo at Laurel creek. Fixed the phone in 10 minutes on his campsite picnic table. He was more than pretty thrilled! I've since gotten repeat business from his family.

Another police office took a dive in the lake and was in the water for several minutes before he realized his iPhone was in his pocket. For A LOT less than what Apple quoted him to get a working phone, I got his phone working perfectly again. He couldn't believe it, and I've gotten referrals from him.

For people who didn't purchase AppleCare+ or have phone's out of warranty, getting their device fixed will be a less expensive option, sometimes by a little, sometimes by a lot. Not just phones I do, but iPads and newer iPod touches. AppleCare+ isn't a bad thing, for myself as I said, I'm on my 3rd iPhone going on my 4th soon. That would of been about $400 spent on AppleCare that I wouldn't have needed. Even if I did break a screen, I could repair it for cheaper than the price of one AppleCare + $49 incident. For people who do get AppleCare+, that's just for 2 years, some people hold onto their phone for 3 or 4 years and have a screen break or maybe they just need a new battery which is a lot less than at Apple.

It's just going to be another option, plus there will be a discount for ehMac members.. I don't think it's a bad thing.

An option I'll be seriously considering, if not taking, if and when another of my iPhones goes on the fritz. I recall your original announcement, but it completely slipped my mind. Instinctually I called Apple.
