I have a son who is 16, starting grade 11 gifted/cyber arts program who will be choosing a film or design University program in two years. He would like a gaming/desktop computer, a laptop for school and needs to learn final cut this year. He has a dilemma about what computers to buy.
He would like to buy this gaming computer (upgraded). He feels the specs on the Mac Pro listed in the Apple Store do not compare and that it is overpriced. This computer would end up costing about $2700
Buy the iBUYPOWER Gamer Supreme 927OC Gaming PC at TigerDirect.ca
In addition to the gaming computer, he is thinking of getting a 15" Mac Book Pro as his laptop for school. This way he can learn final cut on it and hook it up to the TV when necessary – cost at $1500
Total is $4200
The problem with this plan is that in two years he will most likely have to buy a Mac Pro ($3500). If he bought one now and used it for gaming and bought a laptop for about $800 the total is $4300 and he would not have to pay another $3500 in two years.
Note: Prices are from Apple Store Canada
If anyone could give him advice on the Mac Pro as a gaming computer (can they be upgraded & how expensive is it?), using Final Cut with a Mac Book Pro, suggest who might be able to help him get better prices (this is his own money) or what equipment he might be needing as a Film Major or a Design Major. Thanks.
