This was exactly the cause. I did install this update and you're right, this problem did happen just after doing that. The university's website definitely uses Java.
Do you know what I should do to fix the problem? All that article says is to use the Java Preferences app but I can't figure out what to actually DO in that app to fix the problem. |

Well, the first question - is Java turned ON? In the General tab, make sure the checkboxes are checked.
And in Safari->Preferences->Security, is "enable Java" checked?
You may need to restart your Mac to get Java active - not sure. Definitely restart Safari.
