It's got me completely stumped ..

here's the problem - I have a QS G4 867 running 10.2.x and when I put the computer to sleep, it doesn't know what time it is when it wakes ups, it even loses the time settings in the system preferences.

now comes the hard part - it's not the battery (it's been replaced), nor the PRAM (been reset more time than I care for) and I can't find a software issue either. This issue has been with me since purchase of the system although after buying a new battery and reseating the CPU things have been better (the machine had many issues, when the machine was bumped, which tends to happen when it's on the floor, it would either lock straight up and only a hard reset with the CUDA button would get it going again - or it would just turn itself off - those problems have been fixed but the time issue is still with me)

I am very suspisious that this is a hardware issue. My reseller won't/can't help -and it's really "not that important" to be out my machine for a week while they troubleshoot the problem IF they even can find a problem (not to mention the $100 or so dollars they would charge me to say that)

well, after all that .. is there anyone out there who has an idea of my problem and it's solution? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

in OS 9 (yes back when street lamps were lighted by gas), you could sync your mac's time/date to a server at apple

can the same thing be done on OS X?

might help

Are you running the latest version of OS X? There was an issue with 10.2 through 10.2.5 where if you put your machine to sleep for any period of time it would wake up thinking that it was 30 years ago. 10.2.6 fixes this.

It is entirely possible that your PRAM battery is starting to die, maybe try replacing it?

Or, as macspectrum suggested, go to your System Preferences, go to the 'Date & Time' pane, go to the 'Network Time' tab, and tell it to use a time server. If you dont have a broadband or other form of 24/7 connection, you can manually make it syncronize, otherwise you can just leave the box checked and it will periodically do it for you.

Hope this helps some.

Mine would lose time settings after power failures, I have had 3 or 4 in the last month.
The network time control panel is great, and you set it to check the system against the network date and time

OK .. for some clarification on this issue. The reason it's stumping me is that it shouldn't be happening .. I have done all the following ...

1. Yes, I have replaced the PRAM battery (cost me $20 for half a volt and change)

2. I have the most current OS (currently 10.2.6)

3. I DO check off the "Use Network Time Server" .. what happens is when it goes to sleep that become unselected (by whatever magic) and the time has to be reset when it wakes up.

Now, I have done the obvious .. can someone give me an unobvious answer to my "lost time" issue?

How about a couple more clues? Is it a consistent time difference (i.e. alway 3hrs therefore wrong time zone setting)? Is it the right date (rules out pram, I think)?

I'm not too sure about this .. but it looks like the clock is behind the amount of time the computer is asleep. Now the computer doesn't lose time if I turn it off, I never added the hours but it looks like this - computer goes to sleep at 1:00pm and wakes up at 3:00pm - by the time I notice the clock is out of sync it's 1:30pm (or 3:30pm real time). Don't quote me on that but that's what it seems.

did u apply the 10.2.5 -> 10.2.6 update
OR
the combo 10.2.6 update?

if the latter, then i am stuck
if the former, then try the combo updater, it is more reliable

this may be obvious... but why put your system to sleep?, shut it down if not using for extended periods of time, or just turn off your monitor for minor periods.

other people have noted having issues with hotsyn, video cards etc...apple has been notoriously bad getting sleep right....

Check out these articles on www.info.apple.com

good luck

I use my system 12-16 hours of the day but there is a few time of the day that I take off (meetings, walk the dog, etc.) that I wouldn't mind having the computer "shut down" but be back in action with a touch of a button - the instant on from sleep - can't beat that - it's sure better than waiting for the startup, which seems to take forever (it doesn't but it seems that way).

And for the obvious, I never turn off my systems. I do turn off the monitor when I could but I bought a 20" LCD Apple Display and guess what - no power button, so no way to turn it off on it's own.

So far no real answer to my problem, so in the meantime I have set the monitor to "sleep" and the computer to never sleep - this seems to work but if somebody can ever figure out the sleep issue for the computer, I'll be forever grateful.
