Unhappy Mac won't recognize Olympus DS-330 digital recorder

I've had this little recorder for several years, but am only now trying to use it.

Most pressing symptom: When I connect the recorder to the Mac, the recorder simply blinks "please wait" and nothing else happens.

I'm running mac os x vs 10.4.11. I have a 2 ghz internal core 2 duo and have 1 gb 667 mhz ddr2 SDRAM

What I've done so far:
- loaded the DS-330 software successfully. when I open the DSS player, and click on Device, nothing happens. I have no evidence from the DSS player that the recorder is visible.

- I've unplugged and replugged in the usb into the hub, then directly into the mac. Done the same at the recorder end...trying to plug directly into the recorder itself, then tried into the docking station.

- On the side of the dig recorder, this is a button at the top that says "New". When the recorder is not attached to the mac, when I push this button, it says "train computer". I've attempted to hold this button down both before connecting and after connecting the recorder to the mac....once connected to the mac, I get the permanent blinking "please wait" message.

The user manual suggests that the problem might be low power at the usb hub locatioin. as a result, I went into the formatting menu and turned off the usb audio. This had no impact.

For further information...I believe I never "formatted" this recorder, but I assume this means that it has default format in place. I have successfully recorded dictation.

I've run out of ideas... any help?

You mentioned that this device is several years old. Have you checked the Olympus website for updated drivers/software?

updated drivers

I attempted to do so, however, I did that very early in the process. In fact, I'm realizing that I first attempted to download from the internet, then went back and downloaded directly from the cd. I don't think I went back to the Olympus site to update the files I downloaded from cd.

I'll try this out and then respond.

thanks

Someone else had this problem earlier this year on another site...

Quote:
Looking into some of the post I found this info on MacSpeech site.

"Olympus DSS Player for Macintosh will not work on my Intel-based Macintosh
SYMPTOM: You attempt to use the Olympus DSS Player for Macintosh software (version 6.02 or earlier) on an Intel-based Macintosh and it will not recognize your Olympus digital recorder, or will not allow you to transfer files from the recorder to your Macintosh.

CAUSE: Versions 6.02 and earlier of the Olympus DSS Player for Macintosh are not Intel-compatible. While they will run on an Intel-based Macintosh using the built-in emulation software, it cannot interface with the recorder properly due to changes to the Macintosh hardware architecture to support the Intel chipset.

REMEDY: Download the update to the Olympus DSS Player for Macintosh software from the Olympus web site. Here is the direct link.

http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/DSSMac620EN.dmg "

The link appears to be for the full program not the lite version.
However, if you read the full thread, this did not solve the problem for this person. Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV).
