Lookiing for application that uses an eraser like MS Paint?

I need an application for my Mac that has an eraser in it, just like MS Paint has so when I pull up jpegs, I can literally erase parts in the photo.

For those unfamiliar with the MS product, lets say I had a jpeg of a person, on a white background with writing somewhere on the page.....the MS Tool had an eraser in it that would allow me to simply erase that writing off of the page, or whatever I wanted out of it to keep all of the background white.

Perhaps there are programs like Photoshop i could do this with in a more complicated fashion but i am preferably looking for something very easy, which is why i mention MS Pain, freeware and easy to find, etc.

If there isnt one that anyone can think of, perhaps secondary choices can be offered, bearing in mind i havent ever been into editing photos and hate to have to purchase something such as Photoshop to do this with......but will if all else fails.

Try Paintbrush

Quote:
Paintbrush is a simple paint program for Mac OS X, reminiscent of Microsoft Paint and Apple’s own now-defunct MacPaint. It provides users with a means to make simple images quickly, something which has been noticeably absent from the Mac for years.

When Apple released the original Macintosh in 1984, they included two applications: MacWrite and MacPaint. Twenty-five years later, every Mac still includes a basic text editor in TextEdit, but a simple paint program is a thing of the past.

Enter Paintbrush.

If Paintbrush doesn't do it

Try to find a copy of AppleWorks 6. It is no longer made, but I am sure some EhMacers have copies lying around that they do not use. I am not sure, but AppleWorks 5 or ClarisWorks 5 might also run on OS X. I didnotice that it is still for sale on version tracker (unless the link is dead)

AppleWorks X 6.2.7 software download - Mac OS X - VersionTracker

It is a nice small footprint works program with a paint, draw, spread sheet, word processor and depending how far back in versions you go a presentation or database or telecommunications package.

The various functions are pretty well integrated in that say in a draw document you can pull in a picture, spread sheet and a text block onto the document.

Thank you both very much for the answers but i did just end up downloading RGRAYs suggestion of a program called PAINTBRUSH which was exactly what I was looking for.
Eventually I will get around to buying Photoshop for Mac or something but I always find it far too serious for my needs, and PAINTSHOP not full enough for all of my needs but for most of the time, its this eraser tool I need so its just the perfect application for me.

RGRAY, I only wish i had asked you that a few weeks ago...LOL......Ive been transferring images to my Windows PC, using the tool and then transferring it back /sighs

Thank you as well LS...I will look around and see what this one you mention, AppleWorks is like to

PhotoShop Elements has an eraser with lots of control. You can vary the brush size from a pixel or 2 to hundreds of pixels, hard or soft edges even vary the background colour that appears under the erasure.

Good to know....thanks. I will have to get that one next but as it will cost a LOT more than this free one did, I will have to wait to either buy it or hope I receive it as a holiday present......

Photoshop Elements....ok..thanks

Checked that one out. If I am going to spend money, Id rather just buy Photoshop. I sort of either believe in going completely free and there are often many applications one can use, for free that are often as good as the program that does cost money, or at least offers me what i need OR going all out and buying something such as Photoshop.

But I am always open to hearing the MUST HAVE apps that people need for their MACs since I am new as of about a month to mine

I have MS OFFICE FOR MAC
APERTURE
AppZapper
Transmission
MacDust
Fetch
Burn
Cocktail
VLC
iLife
iWork
Folx
Drive Genius
Little Snitch
and im sure a few other small ones

But now that i think about it, I would like to find a good program that rips MP3s in simple LAME format but easily.
By tthis i mean, I used to use CDex in Windows, as opposed to LAME itself but it ripped very well in Lame
But something that allows me to rip in variable bit rate such as 192 - 224

I havent found a good MP3 downloading program yet either.
In Windows I used to like SOULSEEK as it tended to gather people who were serious audiophiles and like myself like variable Lame bitrate MP3s as opposed to everyone that rips them in Itues or something all at 128 or 160 bitrates
I see there is a MAC version of SoulSeek but it isnt stable yet.......and i cant stand programs like LimeWire as all the ripped music is pretty crappy--no one knows how to rip songs on those programs....so if any true audiophiles are here and can recommend a program, feel free, shoot ;-)

Just FYI, a Mac (or an iMac in your case) is short for "Macintosh." It's not an acronym, thus it should not be capitalised. There's another computer term that uses MAC (all caps) so to avoid confusion, don't capitalise when you are talking about a Mac (of any kind) meaning the computer product from Apple.

Ditto for iPod.

I didn't mention it before because you probably found a great fit for your needs in Paintbrush, but just if you're curious there is also a program called Seashore -- kind of a OS X-native version of The GIMP. So you might want to check it out.

I'm sure you'll hear from others about how much more awesome iWork is to MS Office, so I wanted to be the first.

There is a way to get iTunes to do this, via this. Works very well, have used it for years. I now prefer AAC ("warmer" in my opinion) but if you want the best quality MP3s this is an excellent add-on for iTunes.

Alternatively, I believe Max is free, as is All2MP3. Very customisable too.

Broadly speaking, this is frowned on here -- because the artists and creators who deserve to be paid for their work aren't getting anything and/or didn't give permission for this. Obviously, some things that appear on filesharing networks are intended to be there, are perfectly legal, and all that stuff is fine. There are PLENTY of places to check out music/discover music/try out music before buying that are legit as well, from Last.fm to Lala.com (just acquired by Apple), band websites, etc.

iTunes sells songs in unrestricted AAC format songs and albums (etc) for a very reasonable price, and artists make more from it than they generally do from CD sales. The quality of the 256kbit AAC is excellent IMHO, and as I said iTunes now sells songs without any sort of Digital Rights Management (DRM) and whatnot, meaning the songs you buy can be put on whatever device you want to use to listen to them, burned on CDs, etc.

Because iTunes has shown themselves to be responsive to customer feedback, because they support indie labels and artists directly (via CDBaby and others) and because the artist I claim to support actually gets some of my money when I buy songs there, I like buying songs from iTunes and encourage you to give it a shot.

Actually, true audiophiles don't touch any kind of "lossy" formats, be they MP3 or AAC and no matter HOW high the bitrate. Apple Lossless Codec is available in iTunes for encoding CDs to the best possible fidelity to the source, and other lossless codecs are out there too.

Don't allow yourself to be stampeded into the idea that only free apps are worth having! While some freebies are fantastic, in many cases a shareware or commercial app is much better. Keep an open mind.

It's not really a good idea to reject GraphicConverter because it costs a few dollars. GC is not at all comparable to Photoshop - you need both. GC is just what the name implies - it converts from one graphic format to another, with limited editing capabilities thrown in as a bonus. I have full Photoshop, but I would never be without GC. I've seen GC open a corrupt graphic file that Photoshop wouldn't touch, by the way.
