Power Mac G5 No beeps on startup!

Hi Everyone,

My Power Mac G5 was left on over night. In the morning there was black writing all over the screen, and it was making a hell of alot of fan noise. I turned it off because it was frozen, and when i turned it back on. The computer doesn't beep at all. Just give me 3 blinks on the Power LED.

Is it pooched?

Yes, but perhaps not permanently.

The "black writing" is called a kernel panic. The three blinks indicate a hardware failure of some type (hopefully nothing major, but you never know).

Take it in to an authorised Apple repair centre straightaway. DO NOT take it to "Joe's PC Shoppe" unless you have way too much excess money and time to waste.

I'm not sure what model it is.

How can I tell?

Did these Macs use special Ram? Or can I swap in the DDR ram from my Pentium 4 PC?

It depends which PowerMac G5 it is.
The Dual-processor models used PC3200 (DDR-400 MHz) RAM. The Dual-Core models introduced Oct 2005 used PC2-4200 (DDR2-533 MHz) RAM. In both cases, the SPD settings programmed into the RAM module must be correct for it to work. Some generic PC RAM doesn't have SPDs properly programmed, and will fail.
