HELP! Kernal Panic message OSX 10.5, now boot hang
Last night I was on my G5 surfing the net via firefox when all of a sudden an ominous looking error message popped up on the screen, it was a Kernal Panic message.
I had no choice but to push and hold the power button to turn the computer off... After doing so, I turned it back on. Here's my dilemma; it boots and goes to the OS loading screen but just stays there forever. Also, if I leave it there at that screen and dont turn it off, the fans inside start whirring louder and louder gradually until it sounds like a 747 taking off... I feel like I have to put my seat and tray in it's upright and locked position and prepare for crashing...
So at the O/S loading screen it just the little animated circle turning around and around, but it keeps turning forever and doesnt go to the desktop anymore.
It's weird because I really didnt do anything. I didnt install any new hardware, I didnt install any new software, I wasnt messing around with things in the system, it just all of a sudden did this... Whats it mean?

You said you didn't add any hardware - but have you installed any RAM to the machine at any point? If so remove it (leaving the OEM memory) and see what happens.

Still though, I just bought and installed 2 more gigs of Crucial ram in it, now that it has 3.5Gigs it's running alot faster. |

I had been running the computer fine for about 7 hours with that ram in it before that message popped up. I wouldnt of thought that brand new ram would have caused something like this... I'll take it out and see what happens.

Failing the RAM test, you may have a broken/damaged OS (may require repair or reinstallation). Kernel Panics are not always caused by defective hardware.

FYI: DOA RAM is not overly common, but not unheard of. It's completely possible your new RAM is defective out of the box.

It's also possible the ram is not the same speed which can cause issues.
CL 2.5 and CL 3 do not always play nice and the 2 x 256 could even be 2700 someone slipped in.
You've got 3 or more different RAM sets in there.

I made sure the new ram was the same speed and manufacturer as the original. True, someone could have slipped in some extra ram at one point, but it all lists as the same speed.
I took the new ram out, booted, but no difference. It still just sat at the boot screen forever like before.
I then reinstalled the ram, and tried booting into safe mode, which worked. It booted and went to the desktop with no problems. Next I restarted it in normal mode. It booted fine again and went to the desktop like normal.
It seems my problem is solved just by going into safe mode? That seems strange to me because I didnt actually "fix" anything... lol
Hopefully that was just a random thing...

That's good. Use your installer disc - boot off it and repair the boot drive - might fix a few things.

Was it possible that the RAM wasn't perfectly seated?
