My Mac won't play .avi files

My machinist has sent me videos he exported from SolidEdge on his windows machine. They are in .avi files and nothing seems to play them on my powerbook. I've tried adding codecs and extensions to quicktime, it now opens the file, but just displays a white screen for the duration of the video. I've also tried VLC player, and it refuses the video all together. I tried the videos on my friends windows machine and WMP opened and played them without problems. Ideas Anyone?

Well, I've had rare instances where VLC, usually capable of playing just about anything, couldn't handle some files... but MS WMP/Mac did. Also, did you install Flip4Mac, the decoder that allows QuickTime Player to play Windows media?

Get both WMP/Mac and Flip4Mac, here:

Do you know whether these files played on another Windows machine without any special codecs? Or is this a special codec that requires a SolidEdge installation? Can we assume that your friends machine doesn't have SolidEdge? You might try to decipher what the codec 4-digit identification code is on your friend's Windows machine.

Next, have you given Perian (along with Flip4Mac) a try?

Also, would these files be small enough to share so we can help troubleshoot?
