Firewire 400 port not working on iMac 24"

Hey everyone -

Suddenly my Firewire 400 port on the new 24" iMac isn't working. I've tried all 3 of my external drives to make sure it wasn't the drive, and none of them come up. I've also tried 2 different firewire cables.

Is there any preference file or the like fix that I should try before taking it in for service?

You can try reseting the SMC.

Put it in firewire target disk mode (hold 't' at boot time) and plug it into another Mac and see if it mounts as an external drive.

OR

Boot from your OS X install disc and plug in your external drive. See if the drive is recognized by Disk Utility.

If neither of those suggestions work, then it's not software. Take it to your nearest Apple service centre to get it fixed under warranty.

For future reference, you can always check under "FireWire" under System Profiler. Usually, when the/a port doesn't function, there will be no available information under the port name in System Profiler. For example, if/when the port dies, or is unseen,System Profiler will show:

"FireWire Bus:"

Where as a working port would display:

"FireWire Bus:

Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
