Sleep Problems with iBook G4 12" (Late July 2005) Model

Hey Folks. I hope someone here can help me. I have searched the apple.ca knowledge database, and there is no help for my particular problem there, (that I haven't already tried).

I have a 12" iBook G4 that I bought from apple.ca in September 2005. Shortly after I bought it, I installed another stick of 512 Meg Ram and all is good there (I'm almost certain the 3rd party RAM is not the culprit).

A couple of months back, I noticed that my iBook will not go to sleep on it's own when the lid is open; whether using the power adapter or batteries. This is a big pain as I frequently have to leave the laptop (in battery mode) and forget to close the lid. I come back to see most of the battery drained.

The problem occurs no matter how I set the sliders for computer sleep and display sleep. At the prescribed time, the display will sleep, but the computer will not go to sleep. I know this because the little white light that indicates the computer is asleep does not light up. (Yes, the light works fine, as the light illuminates and pulses fine immediately when the iBook lid is closed.) Also, when I wake the display, the computer does not make the familiar (yawning, clicking, cracking) noises that the computer makes when I wake it from having the lid closed when I know that it is truly asleep.

I have searched apple.ca for the answer, and it seems most have a problem of the computer not sleeping with the lid closed, (which mine does fine) or not waking up from sleep (which mine also does fine). The only solution apple.ca offers to fix my problem (computer not going to sleep when lid is left open) is to reset the PMU as per their instructions.

Doing this had no effect, though I am certain that I did it correctly. After rebooting the mac, I had to reset the system clock and what-not.

So here I am now with an iBook that I LOVE

, but sadly the little bugger wants so badly to help me at all times, it's refusing to take a rest when the lid is open.

I am running os version Mac OS X version 10.4.7

Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know the cure?

I'd love to hear it.

It's under warranty, so if you're close to an Apple Store, I'd take it in and ask them for assistance.

unfortunatley, I'm in Ottawa, and not close to an apple store. I was hoping to try to find a solution before sending it in to apple for repairs. Anyone else?

I had this problem too before and found the culprit -- when Salling Clicker was connected to my phone it wouldn't let my iBook go to sleep. Conclusion, check for applications that may be forcing your iBook to stay awake.

Hmmm, I have opend up the "Force Quit" dialogue to see if there are any programs running that may interfere, and the only aplication that comes up, (assuming I have not manually turned on anything) was Finder. Could it be that other applications are running in the background that I can't see using this method?

It could be. You might open the Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder to see if there's anything that doesn't seem right. Also, you might check your login items in the Accounts preference pane. You can safely get rid of the login items, restart, and then try to reproduce the issue.

Try those, and if that doesn't work, we'll try to think of something else. I doubt that it would have to be sent for repairs, since this certainly isn't a hardware issue (it goes to sleep fine if you close the lid), but rather an issue with either the OS or another app. You might consider giving AppleCare a call, too. They're well trained to deal with issues like this.

EDIT: Take a look at KB# 8000. While it might not give troubleshooting steps, it gives some possible causes for an ibook not going to sleep.

Just a bit of a follow up, I tried creating a new account on the system, and made no further changes (aside from moving both sleep sliders over to 1 minute) and the computer will go to sleep on its own when the lid is open (using battery or adapter)... (though it seemed a bit delayed between the dispaly sleeping and the computer sleeping. It takes a few minutes for the computer to follow suit into sleep after the dislplay goes to sleep.)

So it seems it is not a hardware issue at all. Hmmm, must be software related. Can anyone recommend a good method of identifying the application that I'm running that is not allowing my computer to sleep? I'm still fairly new to mucking about with apple settings.

Well, after some trial and error, I found the faulty program, Meteorologist from sourceforge.net.

After I removed this program using the application manager, the sleep problem is gone. I wonder why this program decided to start running havoc on my system...

oh well, I guess I'll live without the program, though it was very neat.

Thanks to all that helped.

Does anyone know of any other applications that will put the current local weather in the Finder Tool Bar at all times, but does not interfere with the sleep cycle of the computer?
