HP printer and Epson scanner don't play nice together?

I just installed a new Epson 4490 scanner on my computer (G4 MDD, running 10.3.9) and can't get the Epson Scan software to launch - it will briefly appear in the dock and disappear.

Part of me is suspicious if it and the HP 3015 all-in-one (printer, fax, scanner) are in conflict somehow, as when you hit the little button on the front of the scanner to automatically scan, it brings up the Epson Scan Assistant but with the HP Scan window. Huh?

Anybody else have such peripherals and similar problems? I notice someone else on the macosx.com forum has posted a similar problem in December, but so far the only responses have been mine :-)

Out of curiousity, I installed the Epson scanner software on a separate drive with 10.3.9 with no HP drivers installed (except from the original Apple OS installation), and I could get the Epson Scan to launch and scan. wheee. Now if it would only do it on my main drive...

I did try the HP Uninstall option and then reinstall the Epson scanner drive again, but no luck. Anyy suggestions or other things to try? Thanks.

I was trying to help a friend with a similiar issue ... they originally had an Epson scanner and bought an HP all in one ... the HP would photocopy and not scan ... same issue as you describe ... the scan program would launch but nothing would happen.

I never did find the resolution ... just wanted to mention it so that you know that you are not the only one who has had similiar issues.

I am having an epson c58. I am also facing the same problem. When i try to print something its giving some software error saying 'driver not properly installed'. Even if i reinstall the driver again it is giving the same error after some time.

From the description, it seems very likely that the answer to your question is "yes, two scanners from different companies (or at least these two) conflict."

Easy way to find out: uninstall the (wretched) HP software (you should still be able to print using Apple's or Gimp-Print drivers) and see if the Epson "magically" works again. If so, you have your answer.
