Burning .avi Files?

Is it possible to burn .avi files onto a DVD-R so that you can view them on a dvd player? Or do they need to be converted. Please don't make pirating accusations. Nothing is pirated.

Thanks

an .avi file is not a format that a dvd player can read. In order to do this you would have to convert the .avi file to mpeg2 and then burn to dvd.

Just did it today with Toast 7. Just create a DVD-Video project and drag your AVIs on there. Toast converts and burns as well as setting up a nice menu window!

I would not have a problem at all helping you out, but andreww just gave you the easiest way to do it. If you do not have Toast 7, you will need to get another program what will convert avi to mpeg2. Once it is converted you can then burn it to dvd. I really hope you have Toast 7 because it really is much easier. Some of the other apps that do the conversion are pretty confusing and some don't work worth a .....

Let us know if you get it going.

I do have toast 7 titanium, do I go to Video, DVD-Video, then drag and burn?

I'm attempting this right now, but I have it on highest quality so it should take a while. I'll post when I'm done if it works.

Thanks for your help.

1. Open Toast

2. Select the Video tab option

3. Choose either the BASIC or ADVANCED option in the side drawer.

4. Select NTSC for North America & High Quality video.

5. Select create DVD menu.

6. Drag and drop your avi or mov files into main window.

7. Name your video tracks - this is optional, but helps you identify movies in the DVD menu.

8. Burn your disc. Simple!

Not sure. What are the specs on your machine? Ram? Free hard drive space? I was burning a 2.5 hour dvd and it took quite a while to encode (1.5 hrs), and maybe another 40 minutes to burn on a 1.8 G5. When I was done I had to reboot cause my machine was running pretty slow, I assume because of a huge cache or swap file.

In your case I would slow down the burn speed to half of what your burner is capable of.
