Why does my burner refuse to write Dual Layer DVD's?

OK a few months back I purchased a 3 pack of Memorex DVD +R DL (Dual Layer) blanks to burn some large files. I made 2 coasters and gave up considering the blanks cost $6 each. At the time I was burning on my Pioneer DVR-109 with Toast 6.11.

Jump to the future, I have recently purchased a Pioneer DVR-110 and I am using Toast 7.0.1 and I just successfully made my third coaster with the exact same problem I had with the previous setup.

I setup the data DVD to be burned, making sure the data size is in range, I insert the new DL blank and press burn - the burner sits there saying "processing ...." and then gives me a medium error (insert some weird code here) and the blank is now a coaster.

What am I doing wrong? Is it the blank? What type of blank works well in the Pioneer burner? Help would be appreciated.

The most common mistake everyone makes is buying DVD +R instead of DVD -R format when burning. The +R is not really a standard, I mean it exists, but your safest bet at all times is to purchase the -R standard.

Most people buy the +R standard because of price, but let me tell you, I can't even keep count on one hand how many people come back complaining about making coasters because their DVD drive doesn't accept that format. Buy the DVD-R standard and you will be back to burning like there is no tomorrow

OK, I have no issue with burning regular DVD's - my issue is with DL (Dual Layer DVD's) or is your answer applicable to this issue too ...
