How do you share a dial up internet connection over ethernet?

I have an iMac and a Mac Mini which I want to share a dial up internet connection between. On the iMac, I have allowed the connection from my dial up modem to be shared over ethernet, but I don't know how to get the Mini to be able to use this. I don't have the firewall turned on or anything.

Isn't Bonjour supposed to make this sort of thing really simple?

What troubleshooting steps have you gone through? Is each machine able to "see" the other? (perhaps use iChat w/Bonjour to confirm this)

I've never done what you're doing, however I would've thought it'd be easy.

Do you have an wireless on both machines? As Mikef said, I've never tried it with dial-up, but try creating a network between the two.

He did mention Ethernet, so presumably the two machines are connected via an Ethernet hub/switch.

Yes, they are connected with a D-Link router (4 wired ports, and wireless too). I am connecting both the iMac and Mini with ethernet cable...an iBook will be added later (wireless).

I run my TiPB & iMacDV through an ethernet hub. Both computers have modems, both of which are plugged into the phone line. Set Personal File Sharing to On and Internet sharing to Ethernet. Under Network (system preferences) make sure the Modem is at the top of the list under Network Status. Both computers should be able to access the internet if one of them has dialed in. However, it seems that only the computer with the direct modem connection can send & receive email. Hope this helps.

You probably have to disable the DHCP server on the router as well, otherwise the Bonjour won't do it's thing (it won't "see" the hosts on the network) and wouldn't know what the Internet gateway (machine with the modem) is.

I disabled the DHCP server but that just seems to make things worse...I can't even transfer files (over FTP) with DHCP off, and could not connect to the internet either.

Has anyone been able to successfully do this with a router?

I finally did it! I made the mini be the main computer (always dial on) and the iMac just a host or whatever and it works...weird...but at least its working!

Interesting... sounds like Bonjour didn't do what it should have. If you don't have DHCP enabled, the machines are supposed to pick their own IPs and be able to communicate with each other.
