Should I install Tiger or Panther on my external HD?

This is my first post of many no doubt I'd welcome your opinions on whether I should install Tiger on my external HD or on my main machine which is currently running Panther. Or should I do the reverse?

I love Panther, no problems, nice 'n steady. I have Tiger on my iBook (which I don't use so much) and it's been problem free (although I haven't installed the latest update)

Right now I'm torn - I'm not that confident that Apple has ironed out all the wrinkles with Tiger yet - so should I wait and just install it on the external for now?

Many thanks.

I took the plunge not too long ago, and I'm glad I did (just make sure to update to 10.4.2). What I recommend is making a bootable backup of your current Panther system, so just in case something goes quirkly you can revert to Panther (or boot off your external if necessary). Try Tiger out for a week, then convert your external to Tiger by doing another bootable backup (and keep backing up after that!). That's the procedure I did.

make sure to run disk utility at a minimum or better yet onyx before and after updating your OS

tiger is much snappier than panther and don't forget to use Tiger Cache Cleaner and setup a RAM disk for added performance

Thanks for the advice guys. Its probably about time I installed Tiger as my main OS anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs on the G5

Erm...one question Macspectrum.... can you explain setting up a RAM disk?

Many thanks.
