Cannot view QT movie

Friend of mine lend me a DVD that is avi format, probably in HD. I launch QT and it give me the following message

"Some necessary Quick Time software is missing. It may be available on the Quick Time web site. If you have a dial up connection to the internet, make sure it is active, then click the contiune button to check for the software"

Any idea what is missing??

Are you sure it's HD?
You could be missing a codec that is not available to the Mac to something as simple as DivX....

Go to versiontracker and download a free app called Mplayer. I use it to play all AVI files.

Another vote for MPlayer or VLC. I don't use quicktime to even try to play .avi anymore. Actually... I even use VLC more than quicktime for quicktime files

How to play DivX .AVI files with QuickTime

How to play DivX .AVI files with QuickTime

To play DivX .avi files (DivX movies) you will have to install three QuickTime components (codecs). Takes less than three minutes.

1) Official DivX codec: www.divx.com/divx/download
It is actually necessary to fix QuickTime bug so that QuickTime can play .avi sound properly (current version 5.2.1 for Mac OS X and 5.1.1 for Mac OS 9)

2) 3ivx codec: www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html
It is necessary to decode DivX, xvid and other MPEG-4 variations. It is the fastest MPEG-4 codec for mac (current version D4 4.5.1)

3) AC3 codec: www.insaneness.com/ac3.html
It is popular audio codec used in DivX movies (current version 0.4)

And that's it! Now you can play all standard DivX movies files with QuickTime without problems! There is no need for DivX Doctor or any conversion. Just open .avi file with QuickTime. There might be some extremely rare cases when wma (window media audio) codec is used in .avi's. Then you can try DivXWMAConverter: www.carrafix.com/DivXWMAConverter

Why should I use QuickTime when I can use VLC or MPlayer?

• Using 3ivx video decoder, the CPU usage is lower compared to VLC or MPlayer. Useful for older Macs with G3 CPU or if you are running other processes that uses a lot of CPU while watching DivX movie.

• This works for .avi files that not even VLC or mPlayer will run

• You can play, edit or export DivX movie with ANY software that supports QuickTime

• You can play DivX movies with Mac OS 9. All of these three QuickTime components (codecs) are available for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. If your Mac has less than 400Mhz G3 CPU you may want to restart to Mac OS 9 because there you will get a bit better results.
