iBook G3 Can't Boot/Read Tiger DVD?

So I ended up with an older iBook G3-500 after a client upgraded to a Mac Mini. The iBook has plenty of RAM 576MB and horsepower 500Mhz but when I place the Tiger (Retail) DVD in the CD tray it spins, stops then pops open? I've loaded Tiger on a much older G3 PM 350 with far less. Am I missing something here?

does it have a dvd drive or just a cd?

That was my first thought as well!. If not hook it up to another machine via firewire target disk mode and install Tiger from the other machine.

24x CD-Rom? should it not Be able to read CD's?

...the Tiger install disk is a DVD, not a CD.

So then it a matter of the CD not being able to read a DVD disc. I've always had PB's with DVD drives so I've never come across this...

If I remember correctly, you're supposed to be able to send off to Apple for a set of Tiger install CDs to solve exactly this problem. I don't remember the details, but someone else here will, I'm sure.

Yes, a CD drive wont read dvds.

Here's the link you need... it appears you need to send in USD$9.95 and your Tiger install DVD in order to get back the CD you would need.
