Angry Argh! Deleted file recovery?

Hi there,

I am in a bit of a panic... it seems that a folder that I required for a client was accidentally deleted a few weeks back... is there any way to recover it or any of the files it contained? I know that on System 9, Norton Utilities worked OK... what can I use on my Panther?

Any suggestions on software or procedure would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
K.

Yikes...

How was it deleted? How big were the files?

Word of advice, the sooner you let someone take a look the better. You don't want the the data to be "too over-written".

You may want to turn to one of those shops that can handle Data-recovery. How badly do you need the file and are you willing to pay for a possible recovery?

There exist a few for the OS X
http://www.prosoftengineering.com/pr...escue_info.php is one that has a good track record. A few weeks back is a long time and the files maybe toast.

The files range in size from a few hundred k to over 25mb... I simply put the files into the trash and I could piece together new files and selected empty trash - there were a lot of other files in the trash as well - I was cleaning off my desktop and deleted the wrong folder... just realized it now. I don't mind buying a small software package to do this but won't spend money on a company to do the recovery as I can rebuild the files for about the same time/cost....

Good luck, although that is a long time, it might be gone, or too fragmented. Let us know how it worked out, I need to add a good piece of recovery software to my mac, just in case, so I'm interested in knowing how it performs for you.

DataRescue won't do anything for files that have been deleted. It's very difficult to get deleted files back in OSX, especially if some time has passed, other files have been written to the disk. You might try FileSalvage(available via Versiontracker, MacUpdate, etc.)-it helps if you can narrow search down to file type, size-you'll get a lot of data that will be hard to identify, as filenames are lost. A back-up to another drive or at least to CD or DVD would have been a good idea...you'll still need another drive to recover on to. Don't recover on to the same partition as the files that you want to recover.

That's incorrect - if the files are not overwritten DataRescue WILL recover them. It depends on how full the drive is and luck.

I got an entire photo folder - 4000 precious irreplaceable photos back for a client.
But a few weeks??? ......... keep your fingers crossed....or send us the drive.

'Nother case for partitioning..... sorry couldn't resist

From Data Rescue Site :

Quote:
Will not recover deleted files in OS X

Q:*
Can Data Rescue recover a file I just deleted (I'm running Mac OS X)?

A:*
No, there is no tool on the market that can recover deleted files without being loaded ahead-of-time OS X (UNIX) writes over your deleted file immediately, impeding recovery (this was different in previous operating systems that were not based on UNIX). Our other product, Data Recycler can prevent this from happening by protecting you from this type of data loss in the future.
You may have been able to recover deleted data from a drive with a corrupted directory, that still has references to the deleted files.

The important thing I've found with Data Rescue X is not to use any other utility before trying to recover with it. Once DiskWarrior has written a new directory, which may correct some errors on a drive with bad blocks, often the new directory no longer has a reference to files that were on the bad blocks, or that section of the directory was damaged by bad blocks. After that stage, the data is almost unrecoverable. I've found that TechTool Pro often makes things even worse, unless the drive had TechTool Protection activated previously.

That's correct - don't touch it with anything else and it's luck but no question that accidentally deleted Photo folder came back intact.
Now I did it on a search for type and 4000 camera downloads takes a lot of space and the doctor noticed the problem quickly.
