More Kernal Panics in Tiger than Panther

I have upgraded my G4 AGP 400 with a sonnet 1.2Ghz card I have 1.2G ram and have installed Tiger.

Now I have noticed that when I do movie encoding or use programs like DVD2oneX and Popcorn to compress movies I get alot of kernal panics.
I don't think it's the card upgrade, on account that everything else I do runs smoothly and quickly, I have a feeling it's Tiger.

Can anyone confirm this?

Also can I go back to Panther? If I do an archive and install that is. Worst case would be to reformat my drive and install panther fresh and install all programs after that again. But i'm trying to avoid that.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've had 0 problems with Tiger. The only problem I had since the switch is a few broken apps, but I knew this was going to happen. Kernal Panics are often a sign of bad hardware, I wouldn't rule anything out as of yet.

How recent is your installation of RAM? (IE: did you use it before you installed Tiger?) Bad ram is a huge factor in Kernal Panics.

Had you used the Processor upgrade before hand? Any other new stuff which you've added to your machine. Are all your applications updated for Tiger?

I think this seems to be a hit and miss for a lot of people using TIger, there are many people with many problems, and many without any. But, I'm guessing that a lot of it is "Tiger Incompatibility." Because.. there are so many without. I know Tiger still has some bugs in it, but I wouldn't rule out other things before you turn back. Just make sure Tiger is your issue

The ram is the same as before and what is new is hardware, but I think i have read somewhere that DVD2oneX might be an issue.

But Popcorn shouldn't be...it's the latest update.

I have to do some more test.

no I got about 30G free on any given drive.

I did get a 512mb ram chip that is fairly new...I took it out and I am trying it again. I will have to go home during lunch to see if it crashes.

I have put the 512 in my BW G3 running Tiger (it only shows up as 256) and I am running it there as well (dvd2oneX that is) we'll see if it crashes there.

I have DVD2oneX working at work on Tiger so it cannot be the program.

Very frustrating.

Went home to check on the progress and it didnt' crash...Both G4 and G3 worked.

So my conclusion is the RAM...the 512 chip that I took out of the G4 and placed in the G3 was the only thing I changed.

As you know 512 doesn't show up in a G3 as 512 only 256, so that was the issue

I called Kingston and found out that the 512 chip is not recommended with my AGP G4

KTA-G4133/512 is for the Gigabit models and up

I need KTA-G4/512

anyone want to trade?

Total crap. They say the KTA-G4133/512 is for "Gigabit" models and higher because it's PC-133 SDRAM and only those models or better had a 133 MHz front-side bus. All PC-133 SDRAM is PC-100 backwards compatible without issue. Your RAM is perfectly fine to be used in any AGP-based G4 assuming it was the the comparability issue with your Blue & White G3 that caused the Kernal Panics.

Well regardless Lars the ram chip didn't work. I know what your saying about it being backward compatble. I didnt get kernal panics in my G3, only my G4, with both doing the same encoding. I figure its because it only sees 256 not the full 512.

RAM mixes cause issues like this - even between different chip batches.

Email me - we'll see if we can work it out for you.
