Word 5.1 freezing

I'm running Word 5.1 on ancient PB 5300C and the darn thing keeps freezing up on me . I delete the preference files it works for a bit but the freezing only returns. I don't have the install disks (it's a used lappy) so I can't reload Word.

Any ideas? Would rebuilding the desktop help?

It would be a good idea to either get a legal copy of the software or delete it. Just because it's installed on a computer you own doesn't mean you own it - retaining it is a form of software piracy.

Give it a rest Gerbill... It's word 5.1... Released, in... uh... 1991...

I have a copy of AT&T Ux Sys V on a computer I found on a curbside. I s'pose, since I never paid for it, it is a form of software piracy. Oh my! I will have to be reinstalled a few times into SCO Hell in the lifetimes to be. Phtpthtpthtptptpht!

Oh... I get it now. Gerbill was being facetious. Oh, ha, ha. Very, very droll, indeed!

Where are the laws that protect users?

Isn't selling a bug ridden piece of software a form of fraud?

More like breach of contract. However, since we are talking about 14 year old software (just how is one supposed to obtain a "legal" copy of that, anyway?) it's all rather mootish, innit?

Word 5.1 was probably one of the more stable versions of the bug masquerading itself as a word processor, so the problems you are experiencing now may not be actually caused by it.

It may be in conflict with some other bits of vintage software. Have you tried turning off extensions & stuff?

We may be able to help more if you mention which version of Mac OS is installed on the PB. The range is System 7.5.2 to 9.1

Cheers,

I think I figured out what the problem was (a loose RAM connection), but I'm talking about software in general.

I'm running Final Cut Express 1.0.1, and every so often I experience a very hard crash on start up (I get the translucent grey screen of death). Deleting the prefs and reinstalling doesn't fit it. The only solution is to delete the last project I worked on. Obviously this is very costly considering that I lose hours of work everytime this happens .

What's Apple's solution? 'Upgrade to HD!' 1.0.1 is all that I need, I don't have the money to upgrade, and I don't think that HD is all that great to begin with. What I do want is a patch to address this problem in a $300 piece of software that's barely two years old .

Why protect the copyright of software that companies simply don't care about? Why aren't there any laws that protect the licensees?

Only Vogons really care about protecting © of 14 year old software. I doubt anyone in their right mind does.

Why aren't there any laws that protect the licensees?

Ain't free enterprise grand?

Corporations control the law, so it's not surprising that, typically, Joe Shmoe can't take on Apple or Microsoft. Don't expect that anyone will do anything about it, either. We are all caught up in a technological rat race.

In our jolly world everyone is expected to buy into the "bigger, better, faster, glitzier".
Since "bigger & better" happens about every 6 months or so, 2 year old software is "obsolete". Corporations have busloads of lawyers churning out legal froth to make sure they don't need to support it, unless by some perverse quirk they actually feel like it.

Theoretically, there are laws to protect the consumer. However, if you tried to put them to use, your lawyers would quickly explain what a bad idea that would be. After they stopped laughing.

Now, if you could get enough people for a class action suit... Not gonna happen with "obsolete" software, anyway...

The whole problem can be summed up by the attitude of an Epson rep who thus replied to a complaint about lack of drivers for several printer models "Buy the new ones."

Manufacturers need a kick in their collective behinds, but the only effective way of fighting them is negative publicity. If you raise enough of a ruckus, you might get some results.

So, if I'm reading this right, it's all right to steal software that meets the following conditions:

(1) it's old

(2) it's published by Microsoft, whom we don't like,

and, software that isn't working right, but can't be re-installed because we don't own a legal copy, somehow puts Microsoft in the wrong and makes stealing OK.

Isn't mental gymnastics a fun sport?
