There are two places where I primarily use my PowerBook: at work and at home. Both locations have Airport Extreme Base Stations. At work, depending on atmospheric anomalies and such, my Airport reception may come and go - occasionally. When this happens my IP address is dropped and I end up with a 10.0.1... number and then have to manually obtain a new IP ...which drives me crazy b/c co-workers can no longer "see" me on the network. Is there a way for me to obtain IPs automatically when the IP gets dropped, assuming the wi-fi reception is OK/present? When I start up my PowerBook in the morning, it finds the network and establishes an IP - what's the difference?

This may be a dumb question, but have you checked your System Preferences>Network and made sure the AirPort was Using DHCP?

Hello,
To get an IP address from DHCP server, you need to throw in the air and in network a special broadcast as this one : "is there somebody here to give me an address ?". When Airport signal drops, you need to send this broadcast yourself as what happens when you awake your Powerbook.
There is no way to reconnect automatically, Airport signal must be strong enough to keep the line on.

Bertrand ... I understand this, but as I type this at home, my airport strength is full and I have no IP ... what's up with this? Surely this isn't normal ...doesn't really matter at home, but when networking with other computers at work it's an issue. Incidentally, this is only a problem with wi-fi, not enet. Thanks for your response.

Telus @ home ... Radiant Networks @ work ... I just booted up my machine and I have an IP, but that will be dropped soon ... as history has proven

Kent, I seem to have the same problem since some days.
When I loose the connection with my Airport Base, it's very hard to reconnect and get an IP address.
The best I've found is to set in Airport TCP/IP, "no" and "Apply" and set "DHCP" and "Apply".
Normally Airort is set to connect automatically to a specific network.
I've some doubts about the last Airport 3.4.2 or Security 2004-06-07 update.
