Thanks for that helpful info Trevor, and maybe if use such as setup if even possible to create a large empty echoing hall type sound. ;-) No thanks.

I guess I'm stuck with Apple's OS X handicapping the use of both internal/external speakers.

Now the trick will be to find a suitable external speaker system with a optical input!

Hmm... this is interesting if it would work, and please excuse my stupidity in this TOSLINK area.

I don't have any TOSLINK mini-plug adapter to try, nor any compatible stuff I could try, but I guess I have a few questions still:

- would plugging in any TOSLINK mini-plug optical adapter also kill the internal speakers??

I see some with and without the extended tip plug thing, or are the ones without just for video etc??

- also some TOSLINK mini-plug adapters with the extended plug, which I gather is needed for audio, also come what appears to be non-conducting plastic
ends.

IE: Redirect Notice
and
Newegg.ca - StarTech GCTOSMINIFM Toslink to Mini Toslink Plug Adapter - F/M F-M

Or could one just jam in one of the mini-toslink adapters without the extended tip into the headphone jack??

Or course an extra optical to analog converter would be required and a RCA -> mini analog cable if any of the optical methods were used.
