Restoring Clone from MacBook to MBP

As in my other post, I just purchased a used mid-2010 13" MBP. Rather than going through a Clean Install (save that for some other day I have lots of time), I'd like to do a SuperDuper Restore, but on the shirt-pocket.com forum, I read this:

"In general, brand new Macs come with special builds of OSX that have support for the new hardware. Even though the version number might be the same (e.g. OS X 10.5.7), the build number is often different.

The hardware support tends to "sync up" in the next release (in the example above, 10.5.8), so Macs released before that OS release will be able to run it.

This means that, most of the time, you should not use SuperDuper! to copy from an old Macs to a brand new one."

Now this is referring to "new" Macs. Can anyone advise me on whether or not it would be okay to do a SuperDuper Restore from my external drive clone to my new MBP?

if you have 10.6.8. I would say go ahead and clone it.
I'm not so sure 10.5 will even run on a late 2010 model.

One thing did, and it worked for sure was installing the grey discs on the original machine, and then taking the drive out and put it on an older model.. worked without a glitch.

A couple of other places I searched doesn't recommend going this route from a MacBook to MBP. Different hardware. Could be problems. So, a Clean Install is in progress. I guess I'd rather start with something fresh anyways.

Why don't you want to use Migration Assistant? -_-

If I hear of others who are hesitant due to issues, I'd rather play it safe and start from scratch.

Format the MBP, install a fresh copy of Mac OS X (from the disc(s) that came with it) and then use Migration Assistance to migrate your personal data and applications. Migration Assistance does NOT transfer the OS from another volume.

Will it work with a fresh install of Lion? What does it do with your Application Support folder in your Library? I thought it was better to reinstall the bigger apps like Photoshop, etc. (which I have). I already set up my User Account with a Clean Install of Lion. Would Migration Assistant bypass that?

Having Lion installed on the new MBP makes no difference; Migration Assistance transfers everything necessary and makes it work beautifully. Trust me - you're going out of your way to make this substantially more difficult than it has to be.

And yes, it does bypass any currently active user accounts -- it does not merge transferring accounts into existing ones, meaning you should use the assistant before setting up a user account on the new machine. However, you can still use Migration Assistance at this point if you have no important data on the new MBP yet. (But it does not delete pre-existing user accounts or data.)

You can manually reinstall Applications, etc., if you wish, but it serves no purpose and you're throwing your time away.

I think I'll go back and do a reinstall and try out Migration Assistant after all. There's a first time for everything.

Although you've already made up your mind on reinstalling.. I want to let you know that unix doesn't treat hardware the same way windows does. It doesn't actually require to install drivers for each peripheral you plug, or add to the computer.

As for me, i only keep one clone of 10.6.8 for all of the macs at work, which varies from late-07 MBP to 2011 MBP and 07 MacPro to 2011 MacPro.
