SSD & HD Upgrade Issues

Hi all,

I embarked on an ambitious project to upgrade my 2010 MBP with an SSD and a larger 750 gig hard drive. Everything seems to have gone smoothly with a couple of exceptions:

1. When I start up iTunes I get a permissions issue. "You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."

Someone else had this and he solved it by:

" I found when I launched iTunes I got a permissions error, and had to actually do a Get Info on my User folder, and re-add myself as a user in order to launch it."

Unfortunately, he didn't leave instructions on how he did this. Anyone?

2. My browsers (Safari and Chrome. Firefox is fine for some weird reason) have lost all of their bookmarks, settings and tabs. Does anyone know how to import all of that from either my old HD that I have taken out or from my SuperDuper clone?

If anyone has any advice that would be great.

Happy Holidays all!

Great, a bit more exploring and it seems that all of my settings for virtually every application is gone. Office, chat programs, etc. Thunderbird works fine though.

Any assist would be greatly appreciated at this point.

On iTunes permissions:

Go to your Applications folder
Find iTunes, click once to highlight
Get Info on it (Apple+I)
At bottom of popup, click on Sharing & Permissions to open view
Click on lock (bottom right), enter password when prompted
Add system with + button, R&W privilege.

Exactly how did you do the upgrade? If you cloned one drive over to the other you shouldn't have had any of these issues. You could then have moved the iTunes over to the other drive using the built in tools in iTunes.

Thanks, I just tried this and it didn't work. "system" was already in there. I created another iTunes acct there with my name and it didn't work but I was able to delete the original "system" account. I created it again and still no go.

I followed the instructions here:

How to Install a Solid-State Drive in Your MacBook
Review: MCE OptiBay Hard Drive for Unibody MacBook Pro

I am taking out not only the original drive but also the SuperDrive. I am replacing the original drive with an SSD and the SuperDrive with a new 750 gig drive.

In the macenstein article, the author also had the same iTunes issue but no mention was made of the other problems I am facing.

How large is your new SSD and how much data are you storing on the old drive? If you can fit all the old data on the new SSD it is FAR easier to just do a full clone of the old drive to the new SSD first and then start moving things around then trying to do it this way as the article is right about a lot of data stored in the home directory.

The SSD is 120 gigs and the amount of data is 350 gigs in total. I am wondering if I should start all over again?

Clone all of the data over to the 750 and clone all of the files except User files over to the SSD? Then, if everything works, wipe out all data except for the User folder off of the 750?

Do you have an external hard drive that you can use for a while? If so what I purpose you do is start over and do the following...

In iTunes change your default location for your iTunes to the external and then do a consolidate step to migrate the data over to your external. This should then free up enough space to do a proper clone from your old drive to the SSD.

Clone the drive to the SSD and install it where you want. Now change the boot option to use the SSD.

You should now be able to install the new 750 drive and then in iTunes change the iTunes location to be the new 750 drive and again do a consolidate step to move it back.

If you have a hard drive shell you could skip a step and during the first migration of iTunes just consolidate it to the 750 in the shell and then install the 750 drive in the macbook.

Thanks Andrew for the advice but no external HD at the moment. I think I will clone to the 750 first, make sure everything is up and running and settings are carried over, and then go about moving the wanted elements to the SSD.
