Disk repair message Help!

I have been having trouble lately with very slow IMac running snow leopard 10.6.6.
Went to disk utility, disk repair following the "troubleshooting tips" from this forum.
In red, this is what I find
Disk description WDC WD 1600JS-40NGB2 Media
Connection BUS-SATA
Connection type-Internal
Total Capacity 160.04 GB
Write Status-Read/Write
S.M.A.R.T. status- FAILING

This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much as possible
and replace the disk. See Apple dealer.

I have been running Time Capsule with my computer, so I am thinking I already have back up ? ( fingers crossed) What disk needs replacing, can I do it myself? Any help much appreciated.
IMac 17" 1.83 Ghz 4.1 Intel Core Duo running snow leopard 10.6.6
Memory 2 G Bus 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM 117.22 Gb available
Wireless Mouse
Time Capsule

Obiovusly, the internal HD that your computer has is failing as you have said. I suggest going to an Apple Repair Centre, or asking someone if they can put a new drive in for you.

Thanks for your quick answer. I have never had a problem of any sort with my iMac in 6.5 years, so was unsure what was happening. I will be getting a new hard drive installed, but went out and bought a new iMac, hooked it up to Time Capsule and all is well. The old iMac can be for the grandkids as long as it works. Thanks again for this community!
