I had a file today and I wanted to save it in another directory. Easy as pie would have been 'save as'...rather than hunting through folders to find the folder and then copy/paste it over.
I really don't like the new save as a version.
Is there a way to turn on 'save as'? I really dislike it for the reason above. I tend to do it a lot, especially when I want to temporarily work on something that I will eventually delete...i save as on my desktop and then deal with it later. This versons thing now forces me to hunt through folders...im not happy
"Other changes are subtle at first. Lion has a new auto-save feature that looks handy, but will require some people (me among them) to adapt behavior. For apps supporting Lion's new auto-save feature there no longer is a "save as" option. Apple has replaced it with "save a version", while some applications, like Pages, offer "save" but no longer "save as". However the "duplicate" option has been moved to the File menu where it can replace "save as". ..."
For more info and suggestions, just Google on 'Mac Lion "Save as..." for whatever application you're using, and I assume in Lion.
I thought I was pretty clear where I wanted to 'save as'.
So I open up a document from the documents folder. And I want to save it again on the desktop. The save as option was convenient. As for duplicate, all it does is duplicate the open document I have open which doesn't help because I still need to 'save it' to the desktop.
So I am now forced to go enter the folder 'documents'...find my doc and then copy/paste it to where I want to have a second copy.
More and more...as apple tries to make life more convenient for people, I am getting more annoyed. Does everything in our world need to be idiot proof?

I want to bring back to the 'save as' option
Gheese, as already replied to and asked and no reply from you as to any details, again, what type of document are you opening, what application is being used and what OS X version are you using???
If you're using Lion 10.7 and Pages, TextEdit or some of the Apple's Lion latest applications, the "Save As..." option has been removed and you need to learn how to use the newer options.
Maybe try a Google search with some keyword details and you'll find various new methods for whatever app you're using that you'll need to learn and use.
As I already posted and replied previously, for more info and suggestions, just Google on 'Mac Lion "Save as..." for whatever application you're using, and I assume in Lion.
Hint: enter 'Mac Lion "Save as..." ' or similar variations without the small quote marks into your Safari Google search area and hit your enter key and checkout some of the hits. Maybe even include the app name and the Mac OS X version you're using.
Or you can do as I did, and went back and booted from my SL 10.6.8 drive.

Guys it's pretty obvious, to me at least, that macamac is talking about Lion

Now that you think about it, I think there is no "Save As" as far as I am concerned. I believe this is because of Lion's auto save feature and "versioning".
Duplicate, and then hit save, it will ask where to save it, same as "save as" would...
Or, better yet, drag the icon from the menu bar (beside the filename) and hold option while you drop it on your desktop.
Yes, I was talking about Lion. Sorry for not making it crystal clear, I thought it was implied when I said "the new save as.." I haven't tried with Pages or word..so far its just been textedit.
Versions is just stupid. I mean does apple really feel the need to make everything idiot proof? I am not a fan of the new Lion at all. Thank goodness I didn't upgrade my laptop.
As for the duplicate issue, it does work, but its just another layer of formality.
Thanks for the tip on dragging the icon from the open window. I never knew I could do that. Anyhow im hoping Lion will grow on me. As of this point, I give it 2 thumbs down.

It's not idiot proof. It's saving proof. Sometimes we may forget (any kind of person can) to save and if something went wrong, you know that it would already be saved... As well, versions is just where it shows the past versions and revisions of the document.... I believe it is auto-save that you mostly complaining about...
