A couple of questions as we all learn about the new applications.
1) When you select any mailbox, the number of messages in a mailbox is not displayed in the header as it used to in Snow Leopard. Is there a way to turn this on or view the how many messages there are.
2) Is the "To Do" list now gone from the Mail App? I see the Notes are still there but I do not see the To Do list.
Overall I am liking the new Mail App and find it more functional and easy to Navigate.
Strange - it shows the number of messages for me in the top of the window.
+1.
Also, I believe To Dos got moved to iCal (and renamed to Reminders), and sync with the Reminders app in iOS 5.

I have a different question regarding the new Mail App with Lion. I like the fact that email threads are shown organized as a conversations. I also like the fact that you can click on the bottom of the individual piece of mail in these conversations and have the "fan out animation" to show more of that individual piece of mail. However, is there a way to have the email fan that portion of the email back in? In other words, once you have displayed that portion of the email, how do you hide it again?

The number of messages does not show in full screen view, but it shows when you're not in full screen view. At least that's the way mine looks.

Yep verified, it's the same here. In full screen mode you don't see the number of messages (as there's no longer a menu bar).
Apple has really messed up the user experience with these full screen app setups ... which BTW are totally useless if you run a multi-screen setup. You go full screen and all your other screens get covered over with "linen"
I'm even finding that the full screen approach doesn't work well with my single 27" monitor. Maybe I just like the clutter of a number of windows open at once. Perhaps my view will change once I pick up my 11" MBA. I suspect that full screen and a trackpad will make more sense in that setup.
Full screen is definitely more useful on a small single monitor layout, I use it quite a bit on my MBP 13".
Another thing that's incredibly annoying with full screen when using Mail though is when you reply or make a new message ... the new "window" comes up in the middle of the screen and you cannot move it. Super annoying when you're trying to send someone some information but can't see the information because that new "window" is in the middle of your screen and unable to move. The only workaround is to either copy all the info to your clipboard before you make the new message or to go out of full screen. I guess I understand the reasoning behind not allowing you to move the virtual "window" when in that mode, but it really feels like this whole full screen approach has a lot of details added after the fact that weren't thought out very clearly -- those things where after they decided to do all the legwork and added it and then someone goes "But what about when you do this?" -- which is followed by a "Well that will be an exception and we'll just make it work like this."
can't exactly say I'm liking the whole full screen layout.. I've always used the full screen option by enlarging the window to cover the whole screen, having an MBP13, it came out of necessity, but I find the full screen layout that apple came up with, very restricting with a noticeable loss of functionality. Hopefully something to be addressed in future updates.
