Mac Book Pro Backlight issues...

Hi Folks,

I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light on my weird issues I've been having with my Mac Book Pro. Its a 2.53 ghz 2009 model unibody.

Sometimes I turn off the display backlight when I leave the machine on while its downloading or doing something else that doesn't need my attention, seemingly randomly the backlight turns itself back on. I've tried changing the "automatically adjust backlight according to ambient light conditions" setting in the display control panel and it does not make a difference. When the screen turns itself on it will stay on until I press a key or touch the trackpad, then the display goes off. Its like the opposite of a screensaver, or energy saver - it goes off when you touch it. Occasionally it will turn itself on, and then back off all by itself. The whole time I machine stays awake.

The keyboard backlight seems to be doing its own thing aswell, I've tried playing with the settings for the keyboard backlight to no avail.

I've also tried resetting the SMC Controller as I read that it does control the keyboard backlight. That didn't change anything.

Any ideas on what I can do next? Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue since upgrading to OS 10.6.8, first on my old mid-2007 pre-unibody MBP then on my new early 2011 Core i7 MBP. I didn't notice this issue when the mid-2007 MBP was running on 10.6.7. I have no idea how to correct the problem.

My new early 2011 MBP is having an issue with keyboard backlighting in that it functions in reverse, i.e. the keyboard is fully lit in a bright environment, but is dimly lit or not lit in a low light environment. This probably has happened since the day the machine arrives. I only noticed the problem last night. This morning I did a test with the ambient light sensor. I had the keyboard backlighting turned on in a bright room then placed a piece of black paper over the ambient light sensor. Sure enough the backlighting turned off when the paper was over the sensor. I searched online to try to find a solution, no luck so far and don't know how to fix this problem.

I have some weird issues with my backlit keyboard on my i5 MacBook Pro, it would flash, come on, stay on for a bit, then just go off. Or not come on at all. It was a lose cable inside. The service tech said they come lose sometimes, it just needed to be pushed back into place. Maybe you should bring it to an Apple store and have them look at that?

The Lion update seems to have fixed all my problems! I guess it was a weird driver thing in my case.

Thanks

Lion fixed a back lit keyboard on a prev gen macbook air that would not work at all under Snow Leopard. A clean install of Lion and the keyboard works.
