I've looked around the net for a bit and I haven't found much on this subject. There seem to millions of webcams, but none say they will work with a Mac (well except the Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision Pro) thats posted on both Logitech and Apples sites. There seems to be that one and the older FW based iSight.
I was also wondering if I could use the PS Eye Toy. It doesn't seem to be working on its own or with some drivers I downloaded called Macam.
I think most of the newer video cams are UVC compliant!
I just got a MS 5000 cam and it didn't say anywhere on the box that it was mac compatible but it was!
I also think most of the logitech cams are as well.
Just buy it from somewhere that has a good return policy and you'll be good to go!
I had an old Windows only webcam that I hooked up to our G4 MDD a few years ago, bought ' iUSBCam' and 'iGlasses' from Mac Apps from Ecamm Network and it worked very well.
But I see that 'iUSBCam' says "Sorry, NOT compatible with Snow Leopard" if that's your OS.
A $5.00 mic from the local Dollar Store plugged into the iMic I already had and every thing work with iCahat and Skype and most other webcam apps.
We have a couple logitech webcams that work no problem and don't say they are compatible. The mac even picks up the mic and knows what to do with it. Probably any USB webcam will work, the problem would be not being able to use the software that comes with it.
I just bought the aGent V5 camera. Looks pretty good on paper and I like the large form factor. If you are interested I can send you a review, or at least my impressions, once I get it.
Thanks for all the replies! I think I'll look around and see what I can find at a Best Buy or Future Shop once the holidays are over and return anything that doesn't work.
Next time I buy a Mac it will definitely be the best iMac I can afford!
Your choice I guess, but you have been provided with a lot of good info to get many a webcam model to work with your present Mac mini for you to check out and use with all kinds of supported applications.
Why create a 'more work' situation??? But that's your choice.
And even with the "best iMac I can afford" you may still have troubles depending on what you actually want to do.
Well the iMac is a couple of years out. But the webcam I will look, based on the recommendations here, on ebay, cragslist and in stores for webcams.
