iWork '08 DVD defective

...anyone know if Apple will replace that?

I tried to load the software in my relatively new Mini.
The DVD icon shows up, the window opens, but I only get three icons horizontally, I expected to get the large iWork graphic on the left and the three icons in a vertical row.
Then when I double click on the install package, I get an error message that the package could not be opened.

Tried to install using a firewire burner I have, exactly the same thing.

Other DVDs including iLife work fine with these drives so I assume it's the DVD.

Try it in another computer first.

Something that has worked for me in the past when I had a similar issue was to copy the DVD to a hard drive partition using SuperDuper.
This could also be done with CCC or OS X's Disk Utility.
For some reason the install worked from the HDD when it would not work from the original DVD.
Also once on the HDD you can try DiskWarrior to maybe do some repairs.
This I have not tried, but only because I did not need to.

Sure enough -

I tried it on a MacBookPro running Leopard and the DVD works fine.
So is iWork '08 not compatible with Snow Leopard?

I find from a Google search that there are those who have iWork 08 working in Snow Leopard.
It would appear that they had iWork installed in Leopard before they upgraded to SL.
There is also mention of once SL was installed updating iWork through 'Software Update'.
Too bad you cannot get it installed via DVD...

My copy of iWork '08 is a Trial DVD (I bought a serial number to make it permanent.) The DVD works just like it's supposed to - Snow Leopard on an iMac. Don't know what your problem is, but it's apparently not universal.

Mine is a retail version of iWorks '08, it says version 8.01 on the disk.

The strange thing is that it opens differently on the MacBookPro with Leopard than on the MacMini with SnowLeopard.

On the Mac with Leopard I get this:

Install iWork '09 on the Mac it works on, then FireWire the two together, drag the iWork '08 folder from one to the other, and forget wasting further time troubleshooting this issue.

You're right - I wasted too much time on this already.

Wasn't the problem with iWork '08??? But it seems to be compatible with 10.6.x SL so what the ...

I guess that dragging it over would work but the various 'receipts' etc. won't get installed if that's a concern.

But what about using FW target boot mode and then run the installer that does work and install onto the stubborn target drive. ???
