XP Pro frefuses to connect to any site but Google.ca

Sorry to sully this troubleshooting guide with a Windows problem. Neighbour running XP Pro amd Internet Explorer can connect to Google.ca (but not Google.com) and run a search which reveals appropriate links, but all of the links refuse to connect.

I'm stymied. The modem is fine, and the Google results are real but he can't connect to any another web site.

I tried the same in Firefox but it won't even connect to Google.ca.

Any suggestions?

Without more information it sounds like it could be a DNS lookup problem.

A quick test would be to enter: 17.112.152.57 (apple.com) or 207.245.252.27 (rogers.com) etc and see what happens.

Send a message via Skype™ to macpablodesigns
try changing the dns entries in the modem/router to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (google's dns servers) , check the Hosts file Windows XP & Vista: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC , also run a program called malwarebyes, see if they have picked up anything.

Hmmm, a Windows problem posted to a Mac list site. ;-)

I'm sure a long way from being a Windows expert, but wouldn't setting up and configuring a different DNS lookup such as Open DNS work?
https://store.opendns.com/setup/computer/

Or try Public DNS Servers - Top Bits

Or maybe even DNS Servers - What Is a DNS Server?

Just another thought, but possibly they have some setting set or a utility (like some Parental Control type thing) that's preventing some sites from any access and they are 'black listed' preventing any access.

But don't ask me how one would check. ;-)
