Help!

I want to move a 20 MB file on my Windows 2000 laptop over to my Beige G3 running OS9.2. I have tried using an ethernet crossover cable and setting up the control panels, but when I click on the AppleShare icon in the Chooser there are no zones available. I'm not really sure what to do on the Windows machine. I'm new to newtowrking so I would appreciate any help I could get.

Thanks

Try access the G3 from the 2k machine through the crossover. And you will want to put appletalk on the 2k machine.

Win2K unless it is the server has some protocoling for AFP over TCP/IP but not a proper implementation of it.

The best thing to go is go to www.thursby.com and download a 30 day trial of DAVE of your Mac to log onto NT/WIN networks, or if you want, you can do it the other way and insall PC MacLAN from www.miramar.com and install their 30 day demo to install a pure Appletalk protocol on your Win2K machine.

Then you don't need to worry about a zone, in your chooser the Win Box will show up.

The best thing to do as has been said it to upgrade to Mac OS X and stop worrying about any SMB/CIFS connectivity problems

You need to configure the Windows box for file sharing. You start at Network Neighborhood. Windows help may give you some guidance, but don't expect much; it's clouded in arcane language.

A demo of Dave will do the trick; it's probably the easiest solution (and it's free). Dave's documentation will help you with the Windows configuration.

Thanks to everyone for the help! I got the network to work using "PCMACLAN". I was impressed with the ease of use. I no longer have nightmares about networking.

Thanks to ehmac for this resource!

You can download a small client server package that runs on PC and Mac called Hotline. I will allow you to share files in both directions in a local intra net setting.
