Sudden and intermittent loss of sound on iMac i7
Hope someone can tell me where to start to troubleshoot.
I've had this problem before on my iMac 24" but this problem seems to have migrated to my iMac Quad Core i7 27". (I had used migration assistant to transfer over my old system to this new computer).
Basically, it is an intermittent and unpredictable problem. Every now and then (it might happen only once a week), I would lose sound on my computer. I would hit the volume up and volume down key on the keyboard and even though the volume level indicator would go up or down, no "blip" sound would be heard and nothing happens. There is no pattern to this and I haven't noticed any consistency as to what I might be doing on the computer when this happens.
I could go into the system preferences and check the setting on the "sound" set up and nothing seems unusual or changed to me. No sound comes out of ANY application when this occurs. The strange thing is that if I was to do a quick switch to my wife's log-in, sound is generated in her log-in. Quick switch back to my account and still no sound!
The only way to definitely resolve the problem is to reboot the computer. Otherwise, sometimes logging out of and back into my account might resolve it. Or tonight, it seems like it resolved itself after I left the computer and came back to it after dinner.
Does anyone have suggestions of things to try to fix this intermittent problem?
