on my wallstreet, when i put the computer to sleep, and wake it up again, the computer starts up, but the monitor doesn't wake up.
if i look closely, i can faintly see the screen up, and no amount of button pressing works to give me my screen again!

it's actually also evident when the computer boots up... after the computer turns on, and the apple logo and the circle wheel thingee goes, the screen where the progress bar is going also doesn't show up.
it gets normal again, after i press the brightness button up.

does this make sense to anyone?
please help!

I had something similar happen with the sleep function while back. Just zapping the pram did the trick.

I had my new PB800 TI book go on me about 2 weeks after I got it.

A quick test to determine what it is would be to plug in an external monitor to the monitor port and see if you can see the mirrored or extended desktop on the external monitor as it boots up.

If you can, chances are it's your LCD screen, but if you can't there is a good chance that its the on board video on the logic board.

Before you try that, you could try zapping the PRAM as "mbangler " stated in the post eariler. To do this if you are unsure, hold down the
"command+option+p+r" keys at boot up. Hold them down for 3 resets (the system chime)
Let go. See if that helps your video

If yes, then continue on. If no, and you still have no video, you have another option. You could try resetting the open firmware on the system.

To do this, hold down the "command+option+o+f" keys at boot time. You will be greeted with a grey screen and some text.

If you can't see anything, you can still type in the command.

reset-all

Type it like it is above and hit the return key after typing. Your computer will reboot with the firmware set to defualt settings. No personal settings will be deleted or modified.

Hope this helps. Chances are it sounds to me like you have a LCD that has died

I am sure someone in these forums would be able to help you get a new screen or logic board for it though.

the monitor works, without it going to sleep.. i think it's the strangest thing. could it still be the lcd?
still haven't tried the pram thing, though, and i hope it's just that. when i got it a few weeks ago, i saw the thing wake up from sleep, and all i've done was take out os8.6 and put in jaguar.. very strange!

i'll try the trick tomorrow..thanks for the help guys!

you have the latest firmware for the machine I assume?

Jaguar will not always run properly if the latest firmware is not installed on Apples CPU's

i checked apple's website, and there were no firmware updates for the wallstreet to run osx.
i talked to my apple technician buddy, and he said that it the lcd probably isn't dead, just a pram zap would do it, he said...
i haven't tried it yet (it's supposed to be a christmas present, and she's in the living room right now) but i'm hoping, crossing my fingers that it's just that.

good luck to me!

sigh.
i tried the pram zap and the reset open firmware thing, and still nada.
damn, i even tried some of the things apple support said i should, and it still won't work.
this computer can't go to sleep!
should i be really concerned? the screen works fine, except the display stays black after waking up. should i just never put it to sleep?

It's Friday morning and I have a hangover but. . . is it possible to start up off a CD in X and try to sleep your computer then? If you can then you know something in your OS is "fubar'd". Regardless, I think your last hope of it not being hardware is your OS. Actualy you never did mention what OS you have. Perhaps the dreaded "re-install" is appropriate here. Let us know.

i'm running osx jaguar. the os was freshly installed, and hit no snags... actually a new symptom arose on christmas day-- when the computer was starting up (the apple logo and the swirly circle thing), the screen flashed and all of a sudden, the apple logo got all fuzzy and pixelated, and the circle thing was gone. i did a reset and started it up again, and it was fine... then another time i started it up, it did ok, then there was a square, about an inch all around appeared on the desktop, with little pixels that looked like little grey ants running up and down it. another reset... i'm afraid the lcd's gone on it... thinking i should bring it to an apple retailer, and seeing if they could fix the problem.. any hints?
i'm getting afraid.. very afraid..
