Question Please help me with videostreaming

I'm new to videostreaming. Yesterday I was excited to find a site (stagevu.com) where I could watch full-length movies but was then disappointed when I tried watching a movie and it would stop almost every minute to buffer. Sometimes it was every 30 seconds. Needless to say I didn't get more than 5 minutes into the movie because this was too aggravating. I tried several movies but the same thing happened with each one. As suggested in the troubleshooting tips, I installed the DivX Web Player (version 2) for Mac but that didn't do anything. I've also tried adjusting the download cache size in preferences but that also has no effect.

Here are the specs on my computer: I am using a Macbook with OS 10.5.8, 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo & 2 GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Shouldn't that be ok to do videostreaming?? Is there something that I need to adjust on my computer? Or is it related to the site in question? If there's a better site, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help! And Happy Easter!

I'm using sympatico-- the Performance package. It's supposed to have download speeds of 6mbps but i've tested it before and it was closer to 7. I have a wireless connection.

If the site is busy or is underpowered server wise this can happen. How is it if you plug the computer in with an ethernet cable and watch?
Sometimes wireless has its own issues such as interference.

Well I just tried. Same problem, if not worse, with ethernet. I think I'll try some other sites and see if I have the same problem.

StageVu is a slow loading, and therefore frustrating site to watch streaming video. If you really want to watch a particular video you would be better off downloading it from that site and then watching later on your computer. However, that dl is usually quite slow. So, you must be patient until the file downloads in its entirety.

Thank you, that's good to know. I've tried another site (moviewatchlist.com) and it seems to work ok. But Stage Vu seemed to have some more obscure films that I wanted to see so next time I'll try downloading instead. Problem is with sympatico, I have a download cap so I"ll have to keep an eye on that.

Do you have any other suggestions of sites to watch films online?

Based on my experience, I'd say your download speed is too slow for this unless you seriously cut out all other net-based activities while trying to watch.

My other suggestion would be to rent movies from iTunes -- or Netflix's downloadable option (does Zip.ca have streaming yet?), et al. They seem to have found the answer to the problem, ie by charging a modest fee, they can afford the servers/bandwidth needed to delivery a satisfactory experience. "Free" sites are a) probably illegal being run out of China or suchlike and b) always going to have bandwidth issues.
