Time Machine Help needed

my time machine is full but here is the problem

I originally set it up for the size of my mac HD which is 250 GB, now right now I only have 92 GB on my mac so it being full should not be occurring especially since my time machine has deleted most of the backups that I have leaving only 1 from March 20.

I believe the problem I have is that my old backup got combined with the new one. Late last year I had to wipe my HD clean, I guess when I reset my time machine the old back (even though not viewable in Time Machine) data is still in the actual backup file which has a size of 257GB.

Any recommendations on how to clean this up? starting a new time machine back up to my HP server is not a problem with me, I just have no idea how to do this.

Have you looked at the TimeMachine volume in the Finder to find out exactly what is there and taking all the room?

If you've only got 92GB on your HD and ONE TimeMachine backup is 257GB, something is really wrong. Are you SURE you're looking at individual backups or the entire backup folder (which will be called "Backups.backupdb")? Have you got two backup data bases on that backup drive by any chance?

My individual Time Machne backups are pretty much exactly the same size as the contents of the drive it's backing up. Taken altogether, my entire Backups.backupdb folder is about 120 GB larger than the contents of the drive it's backing up. (450GB vs 570GB) - the difference of course, being the things that have changed over the three months since I started using Time Machine. (I also have SuperDuper backups - been doing that for years) Obviously, depending on your usage and the length of time you've been using Time Machine, the difference in overall size between your entire backup folder and the contents of the drive being backed up will grow.

The recommendation is that your backup drive be 2-3X the size of the contents of the drive you want to backup.

Hey Paddy , tx for the reply

Ok I messed up on my figures, I have 206 GB used on my HD and 92 GB available.

The macbackup file on my HP server indicates 257GB size, my last back up indication on my finder in the backups.backupdb for 2010-03-20 has a size of 78.42 GB. It does seem to be a exact match of my harddrive contents from saturday though. I have dumped a bunch of raw home videos on sunday and monday jacking my HD space usage way up though which has caused this problem.

I have no problem either a starting from scratch or increasing my backup size but I have no idea how and I am no sure if something from my previous backup got mixed up with my newer backup hence the 257 GB indication on my server

you could browse your server and delete any old backups...
