Restoring saved emails

I had an IMAP account that I no longer have access to. However I had many email messages from that account saved on my Macbook. I don't know what I was thinking, but I deleted the account in Mail. I then realized that I wouldn't be able to read my saved messages anymore. So I restored the directory ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com. Mail still couldn't see it. I then changed the directory to ~/Library/Mail/imap-XXX{username}@{domain}.com and recreated the account. Of course since I no longer have access to the email account it doesn't connect (although that didn't keep me from seeing my stored email before I deleted the account). I then deleted the newly created ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com and renamed ~/Library/Mail/imap-XXX{username}@{domain}.com to ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com. I still can't see my saved emails. Help!

I am assuming you mean ~/username/Library/Mail, that should be where any mail files live.

What did you restore from? A Time Machine backup or other? In my experience, once you delete the account from Mail and all of the messages are gone, they're gone gone... even if the folder is still there for some reason.

You may want to try creating the account first and then importing the Mail files to that. You should also be able to import the messages (if they are still there) to another account in Mail other than the original IMAP account.

Yes, you are correct about Library/Mail.

From where would I import them? Again, this account is already deleted and I no longer have access to the mail server.
