iMac desktop freezing

Hey everyone!

My iMac, 3.06GHz 500gb April 2008, has been running fine (although a little slow thanks to the amount of images/video/software on it), until today when I decided I needed a change and moved my dock from the bottom to the left of my screen. Now all of a sudden my desktop is freezing on me. Everything else works, the dock (magnifications, launching programs, dragging files from finder to the trash, etc.) all works and i have programs like firefox and itunes running no problem. However, I can't do any changes to my desktop. I can't moved folders, drag to select folders, open folders, or create folders (although they appear after i restart). I've determined the cause is by moving my desktop because as soon as i place the dock at the bottom again everything becomes "unfrozen."

I haven't altered any system files for customization aside from using candybar to change icons (which i believed was causing the problems, because i had changed icons after moving my dock to the left) but after i restored all icons to default the problem still persisted.

Any thoughts?

thanks for reading.

hmmm...

Have you tried repairing your disk permissions in the Disk Utility app? (applications>Utilities>Disk Utility). I have found that to fix 95% of an buggyness experienced in Mac OS. To go even further, maybe try Onyx with it's Cleaning and Maintenance scripts to make things run smooth.

:S wow darrellk, sorry to hear that.

My problem seems to have been solved. Cleaned out some old software, repaired my permissions and put my dock back on the left and no freeze-ups for atleast 10hrs...

Thankfully my logic board seems to be in good condition... i wish i only paid $1500 for my iMac

At least its still under warranty and everything should get fixed up for you... it is an inconvenience though.
