Trouble with iPhoto and iTunes after upgrade

After running the last software upgrade, I had trouble starting either iPhoto or iTunes.

iTunes gave me the message that the iTunes Library was made with a newer version. I had to delete the library and re-import all my songs to get it to work again.

iPhoto just crashes each time I start it. I tried re-storing from Time Machine but it still doesn't work.

I believe my trouble has to do with the fact that both my iPhoto Library and iTunes Library are on external drives. Any advice on correcting the problem or ensuring that future updates work.

With regards to iPhoto -- have you tried moving it back to the original drive, repair permissions, open iPhoto holding the option key down and selecting the moved-back library? Does that help?

That's a good suggestion but I'm trying to avoid doing that. My iPhoto library is massive (54GB) which is why I have it on my external drive in the first place. I might have to resort to doing what you suggest though.

You may want to consider breaking that large library up into smaller ones. You can do it manually with iPhoto's own multiple-library capability, or use a program like iPhoto Buddy or iPhoto Library Manager to help.

I think I will do that. I didn't know iPhoto had that capability. Must be new.
