Same HDD, different XServes?

Hey Everyone,

We have a dual 2.3GHz G5 Xserve at work that is about to be retired and replaced by an shiny new intel XServe. When this happens, the G5 will most likely come home to live with us.

It is currently used as a central file repository for prepress and pressroom. We have always had the best of intentions to set up a mail server etc but just haven't got there yet.

My question is: Can I take the drive sled (containing just data, not the os sled) from the Intel XServe at work and bring it home to plug in to the G5 XServe at home.

This is not something I would envisage needing to do often but it would be nice to be able to bring work home that easily.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

B.

Thanks for the response mguertin.

From what I'm reading, the drive sleds on the Intel and G5 XServes are compatible, it's just the XServe RAID sleds that won't fit. I'm more interested in knowing if the Intel formats the drive differently than the G5. Remember, I'm not swapping the OS drive, just the data drive so I can't see why it wouldn't work.

I'd also like to know if I can do it with two mirrored drives. For example, take mirrored sleds 2 and 3 from one XServe and put them in the other XServe and have the mirrored array recognized and accessible?

Worst case scenario, if no-one knows here, I'll just try it when we put the Intel XServe in.
