New Hard Drive Installation in G4 iBook

I have successfully taken my iBook apart, installed the new Hard Drive and put the thing back together again.

I turned it on and inserted the install disk, hoping to put the OS on the new hard drive. The problem is that the new hard drive is not being recognized when the installation process asks for a destination. When the power is on, I can hear it humming if I put my ear to the case.

Any suggestions on what I did wrong or should try?

Me again. When I use System Profiler or Disk Utility, it recognizes the disk, but when I go to install the OS, it doesn't show up under destination. Do I need to format the disk first. If so, how do I do this (I am coming from a Windows world).

Use Disk Utility to Erase (format) the drive as Mac OS Extended and then you can install.
