Red face Is there an easy way to network 2 macs?

Ah for the "good" old days of AppleTalk.....

I & my mom have tried to network her MacBook Pro and her husband's iMac wirelessly for xchanging files, printing wirelessly, whatever....and I can sorta
figure it out, but it's pretty tricky now-a-daze... Is there some kinda application
I could install to make it almost idiot-proof?

thanks

it should be really easy. If they are both on the same network they should see each other already. In preferences you can go to sharing and set what you would like to share as well, ie printers.

It really doesn't get any easier.

True, sharing easily has been what set Macs apart since about 1984.

yeah thanks

thx for the replies-howEver-but....
I swear my mom's stuff hates her...it likes me though..she has an all-in one inkjet printer which does wifi and usb-so...she could use her Airport...or her printer..but not at the same time
and yesterday I showed her a color laser printer for around $150-samsung CLP 300-just came out--networkable version is $50 more...

yeah...sharing SHOULD be EZ... notice I said SHOULD be....but alas a 1click solution has yet to be found....she hasn't even figured out how to back up her stuff with Time machine and that half-gig mybook drive on her husband's computer yet---oh well, looks like it's "Ol' John" to the rescue yet again...sigh
I went over there last week, and saw that their chandelier was down, so hubby
got on a ladder and removed it-it went "foof" when he put in a light bulb, then
he took it to an appliance shop to be fixed. Didn't bother calling me...it should be back in the house, oh, maybe this friday...I kid you not....

Just when you think things couldn't be stranger...

Steps:

1) Turn on sharing in the preferences control panel on both commputers.
2) Click on the Go menu, select Network, click on the computer that shows up in the window, it should be the other computer.
3) I believe there should be a button to click to login, click that and login and then click on the hard drive of the other computer.

That's how I do it, but then I have admin users on all the computers in my house.

John, what version of OS X are running on the computers. 10.4 and 10.5 handle sharing slightly differently.

Also, if she has an airport base station of any kind, can't you set it up as a print server for everyone on their network to share?

hmmm...boy.....

yeah, it's Intel 10.5.5 on both of 'em. I'll try what you say when I get a chance, but for my money, Apple dropped the ball on this whole sharing thing in Leopard- I don't like it at all

It's all this darn security stuff

You're right: transferring files between Macs isn't as easy as it used to be, probably because Apple improved security.

Do your folks share one account on both computers or do they each have their own accounts? If they're sharing, it should make file sharing easier to setup.

BUT if they each have separate accounts on both computers, they'll only be able to share files placed in a specific "Public" folder.

HOWEVER, if you set them up as administrators (at your risk), then they can share whatever they want on either computer.

Let me know which of these scenarios applies and I'll see what I can figure out.
