iBook/MacBook router problems... I think

Hi all,
Where shall I start?
I have two laptops: An old iBook G3 Snow and a newer Macbook.
My Macbook obviously had an Airport card in it, whereas the iBook didn't. I managed to find one online, installed it but I am not in any way, shape or from managing to hook it up to my router. There is no problem with the Macbook, it is up and running.
When I turn the Airport on, my router appears in the list, but when I try to join that particular network, I get the following message "There was an error joining the Airport network "dlink"" - with the option to try again or OK.
I seem to be able to join someone else's network (someone in the neighborhood who has not secured their network), but I only get three bars and they jump from three to one and back up again. Coudl this have something to do with the antenna?

Anyone any ideas as to how I can get my two laptops working wirelessly?

Cheers
T

The iBook G3 has an old technology airport card so the card would be B/G I think. Your Macbook has the N type of airport card. Just check if your router is configured for the B/G/N airport card models. If you can access another network with the G3 than I don't think you have a hardware (entenna) problem.

If you turn off all security (WAP/WAP2/WEP) on the d-link router, can you connect with the G3?
