45.78 to be exact. Amateur only, although I do sell prints in our area.

I have 32GB of images. A good hi-megapixel camera plus an interesting life (or kids!) can easily create that number of images. I have about 4,300 images in my library.

Given your situation, csonni, just go into iPhoto's preferences, Advanced, and UNcheck "copy photos to iPhoto Library." Then iPhoto will use your pictures wherever they lay, and only keep thumbnails and modified versions.

HOWEVER, if you do this it's important that you not move/rearrange the photos, or iPhoto will be unable to go back to the "original" because you will have broken the association.

Ya I hear you, I used to take a lot of pics a year or two ago but I got kinda tired of having to lug a camera around everywhere even though I had a fairly small one. Call me lazy I guess, plus I felt like papparazzi lol, pretty silly reason. I want to get back into it though. Perhaps when I get my new Mac and iLife '08. I want to learn Aperture 2.0 as well; any recommendations?

About keywords. Is iPhoto keywords embedded into the file, such as IPTC? Will other image apps recognize the keywords assigned in iPhoto?
That's where I got disappointed with iPhoto (which I use nevertheless...)
The way I understand it, iPhoto keywords are embedded in the database. I'm a reporter, and once in a while take my own pictures (usually in the boondocks, where they don't want to send a shooter...) I have to open up my pictures in PhotoShop to access IPTC fields to write my caption -- there's no way to do it from within iPhoto.

I understand about how important it is not to move any images once iPhoto's got them. What about adding keywords and whatnot through PS. That won't mess things up for iPhoto, will it?

Actually, what I do is that I export my chosen pics as files to the desktop (full size, of course) and then add the information in PS and email those pictures.

I actually did it not 60 mintues ago -- a house burned down not one km from my house.

No, because anything you do to a picture in iPhoto (or an external editor called via iPhoto) goes into the Modified folder of iPhoto's library. The original is NEVER EVER TOUCHED.

Wow. That's something to remember then if ever eliminating iPhoto. Someone may do a bunch of work on assigning keywords only to find out they trashed them all with iPhoto (while keeping the "untouched" originals.

I've got some images imported (without copying) and really like how iPhoto organizes them. I see that iPhoto's Library still gets chunky as I build my Library. Another question. How can I keep iPhoto up-to-date as I add images to my original pictures folder? I suppose I will have to import them after I get them off my camera and color correct and add them to my folder. How about if I let iPhoto download them off of my camera? Will iPhoto copy them into it's Library? That means I'll have to duplicate them to my own folder?
