I'm a new mac user from the uk, and wanted to know a few things that for some reason, couldn't find on goooooooogle:
1. Whats the fastest CPU upgrade for my G4 Sawtooth? It's currently running @ 400Mhz.
2. I have obtained a set of Panther (10.3 I believe?) Install CDs, and do I just hold 'c' down whilst the first cd is in the machine to boot and upgrade from the existing 9.2?
and lastly (sorry for the barrage guys)
3. When I plug my G4 into my 22" Widescreen Monitor, after a few seconds, it says 'out of range' on the monitor - now I know this is due to the resolution, but can I boot into a 'safe mode' (sorry for the winblows term, but I'm a cross-platform user and a nooooooobie, remember?) to alter the resolution?
Thanks for your help in advance, and so far, have to say this is one of the better mac forums I've been on.
2. Panther is okay, but it is definitely at the tail end of it's usefulness. Tiger (10.4) is the optimal system for that machine. Be sure to do your updates to 10.3.9 asap.
Yes, you can just upgrade like that, but there's better ways to go about it.
3. Your monitor issue is while under OS 9? I'm 99% sure that problem will solve itself when you upgrade. OS X is a completely different animal. You should be able to do System Prefs and detect displays.

Welcome to ehmac!
thanks for the advice, and i meant be kind in terms of flaming; so far i have been asking many many q's in different forums, and i've been flamed for not knowing, even though i've openly admitted to being a noob (well, where mac are concerned anyhoo).
anyways, am i not right in thinking that if i boot to upgrade, the monitor will still say 'out of range'?
I may be being thick here, but really do appreciate your help, and thanks for the reply so quickly!
I put a processor upgrade (1.4 ghz) in my G4 400 Graphite and while I was well pleased with the speed bump on day to day stuff, I found it had an adverse effect on a few pieces of sowtware. Notably Toast {and any other software} I was using to repurpose video formats or burn dvd's would crash.
I also tried to put in a ATI 9800 agp video card, but found it would overheat and crash. Specs and ATI assured me it should have worked but it was too much.
Others reported spotty results. Most recommended the ATI 9000 video card.
If you have the original video card, it might not be able to run your monitor???
I would also go to Tiger - It runs great with the 400 ghz processor too.

thanks for your help so far guys, i'm currently posting from my new g4 via an old crt monitor just to get to grips with mac os, but os9 is poo!!!
i hve put the 10.3 cd in the drive, clicked on the install icon, and the computer restarts, but the screen goes blank and the mac just sits there...
i have made sure that my firmware is up to date as i downloaded the latest avail, and it said there was no need to update as this was the firmware i have.
i'm gonna keep looking, but any ideas so far to help me get osx?
Is there an Apple logo when it sits there? You might need to wait for it to load. Otherwise go and put the HD in another Mac or bring this one along and put it into target disk mode and install from a different Mac.
cheers for the reply quicksilver, but i dont know anyone else with a mac!
i know the cd is ok, cos i can open the installer icon, so summink else must be causing the issue - how long should it take for the apple logo to show? and, is the dvd rom automatically set to boot? could that be the issue?
The apple logo will take some time. As long as it shows the Apple logo, you're fine. Just leave it for about 2-4 minutes and the installer should show.
It will get done sooner, but for sure it'll get done in 2-4 minutes.
