Attached is a screenshot of my issue. iMovie opens but then it renders itself completely useless because the library of video is frozen, i can't click anything but the bar with file, edit, view etc. on it. It doesn't show me any of my previous projects and it's all very frustrating. My software is up to date as of a few minutes ago. If anyone has any suggestions (other than deleting and reinstalling the entire application or reinstalling leopard because i have already done those things to no avail).
In the picture you can see that it all looks normal except for between the video library and the project thing there is a gray block that shouldn't be there. Thank you for your help!
Go into your ~/Movies folder (thats the Movies folder in your home folder) and move the iMovie Projects folder to the desktop and then start iMovie. Does it work now? If so, one of the projects you've created is corrupt and will probably need to be recreated.

Glad it worked! It happened to me as well, only it was sort of my own doing. One of the annoying things about the new iMovie is the way it builds the project. My wife made a slideshow with music on her iMac and then I copied the project to my MBP to finish it. However, iMovie could not find the music she used so I tried deleting the music track but it wouldn't let me. I opened the project plist file and found out that the music track was pointing to her music library. I changed it to point to mine and the whole thing went belly up. iMovie would freeze when opening. I removed the project and that cured it, but I had to finish the slideshow on her machine. Pretty annoying considering the old iMovie had "portable" project files. In iMovie '08 it doesn't always copy all of its resources to the project folder, so if you move it to another machine (like I did) it ends up with broken pieces because it can no longer find all the media it needs.
Anyway, glad it worked!
