which is it-ram or logic board (PB G4 Alum)

okay, I was trying to upgrade my mom's older laptop (the PB G4, where the ram is accessible thru a hatch underneath, and not under the keyboard ) She had 2 256
ram modules installed (hynix, I think) I tried to put in a 512 module on top, and a 256 underneath. So far so good. rebooted. Machine sees 768 megs of ram. After that the machine started running very hot, and shut down....I don't know quite yet if my mom's battery and ram thing are among those affected by the recall (you never know) so she's beggin me to put the other 256 back, which I will tomorrow

I'm just wondering-how to test the ram/logic board easily
the 512 meg module is a 333mhz sodimm made by TMTC if that helps
nothing critical yet, just makin' me say "hmmmm"
any ideas as always, welcomed

JB

If the original RAM doesn't shut the machine down randomly, then the 'new' RAM you put in is defective. Perform that test tomorrow when you go back. The logic board is fine if the original 2 x 256 DIMM's function okay.

And if you put 2 x 256 in and it only recognizes the one in the upper socket, then you swap their positions in the sockets, and it still only recognizes the upper socket, then it;s the logic board.
